Upper Goulburn Wine Region

The region is sandwiched between the Strathbogies to the north and the Yarra Valley to the south. The cool and diverse Upper Goulburn wine region builds and rises to meet the rugged snow country to the east. The Upper Goulburn can be marginal country for red grapes, although in warmer sites and warmer years pinot noir, merlot and even the later-ripening shiraz and cabernet can produce reds that are fine, perfumed and elegant in style. More successful, more often, are white wines made from aromatic grapes such as riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and marzanne- wines that reflect the climte in their purity of fruit, and the often gravelly, tough country in a refreshing minerality of taste.
