Upper Goulburn Wine Region The Upper Goulburn wine region is a significant cool-climate wine grape growing area in Australia, producing premium award-winning wines with international reputations. There are some 25 wine labels in the region, producing wine from grapes grown in more than 30 vineyards. Although only recently identified as a separate GI, grapes have been grown in the Upper Goulburn Wine Region for over 30 years.
The Upper Goulburn wine region is north of the Yarra Valley and is diverse in is geography, stretching from Glenburn to Mt Buller along the Melba and Maroondah Highways, north to Lake Nillahcootie on the Midland Highway and from Tallarook through Yea to Eildon along the Goulburn River. It includes the regional centres of Mansfield, Yea, Alexandra and Eildon. The region derives its name from the predominant feature, the Goulburn River. The region is rich in natural beauty of lakes and river systems and is recognised as the major gateway to Victoria’s high country. (click for a map of the region)
The region includes a range of microclimates, but is predominantly true cool climate viticulture. The terrain is hilly with a proportion of river flats.) The cool evenings of the high country combined with its location on the northern side of the Great Dividing Range with significantly higher sunlight hours gives the region a natural advantage. The region is ideal for the production of crisp and racy aromatic white and sparkling wines and elegant, textural red wines. Riesling and gewurztraminer wines by Delatite, have an international reputation. Varieties such as chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, viogner, pinot noir, shiraz and the lesser known pinot meunier and dolchetto are also grown. Making use of the climate, the Upper Goulburn Wine Growers have a commitment to quality production with a low environmental footprint.
The Lake Eildon tourism region is central to our district and attracts mainly holiday makers and day trippers. Trout fishing, water skiing and bush walking in Summer through to snow sports in Winter are all within the Upper Goulburn Wine Region. The Upper Goulburn, as a destination offers quality wines matched with distinctive regional cuisine and tourism experiences that in combination will excite the senses like no other
